2012 - The 113th Christmas Bird Count
The 2012 Austin CBC was run on December 15th. We tallied 151 species which was a respectable count for recent years, though not a record. What we lacked in exceptional numbers we made up for with exceptional rarities!
The historic drought that has affected previous counts hung on for 2012, causing some of our usual birds to be fewer in numbers but perhaps accounting for the exceptional sightings of a single Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Common Loon, Harris's Hawk, and other unusual species.
In 2011 the total number of individual birds recorded was 57,579. This year's total was 89,060. I wonder what accounted for the jump? More participants? More hours looking for birds? More study will be required to discern the reason.
The count summary report is attached to the bottom of this page for the 2012 count.
